Staff Parish Relations Committee

The SPRC’s purpose is to encourage, strengthen, nurture, and support the pastor, staff and their families and to promote unity in the church. Responsibilities include:
  • Developing policies and procedures related to all non-clergy staff (e.g., hiring, dismissal, compensation, benefits, evaluation, maintaining current job descriptions and personnel records).
  • Recommending to the Church Council compensation packages for pastor and staff.
  • Serving as liaison between the congregation and pastor and staff.
  • Helping staff to succeed in their jobs through adequate supervision, evaluation, training/continuing education, prioritizing workload, maintaining accountability, and encouraging self-care (e.g., through spiritual renewal, use of sick leave & vacation).
  • Developing, with the pastor and appropriate committees/groups, proposals and job descriptions for new staff positions to present to Church Council for approval.
  • Interpreting to the congregation our connectional responsibilities to the regional (Annual Conference), national (General Conference), and global United Methodist Church through our financial and spiritual support (e.g., apportionments and special givings; special projects; missionary covenant relationship; clergy serving on district, regional and national committees).
  • Interpreting to the congregation the Itinerant System of appointing clergy by the Bishop of the Annual Conference. In late fall, clergy and local churches, through their SPRCs, submit their preferences for reappointment or change to the Bishop. The Bishop and Cabinet consider all requests, openings, and needs of churches throughout the Conference in making appointments. Clergy and local churches are to accept and abide by these appointments.

The SPRC consists of five to nine members and is divided into three classes, one of which is elected each year to a three-year term. In addition, the lay leader, lay member of annual conference, and pastor serve on this committee. Our SPRC meets monthly and all proceedings are confidential, except as required or appropriate to share with other church committees, the local congregation, and the District Superintendent.
