April Scriptures

Third Sunday of EasterCommunion ServiceApril 6, 2008

Guest Speaker, John Fugitt

Scriptures:  Luke 24:13-35

Theme:  Emmaus.  Jesus reminds these dispirited followers of all they have seen and heard, its grounding in Scripture, and how they can take the next steps to live this way now.  But they “get it” only when he breaks the bread.

Fourth Sunday of Easter,  April 13, 2008

Scriptures:  Acts 2:42-47,  John 10:1-10

Theme:  The signs of a Christian community, alive in the Spirit -- abiding in the teaching and fellowship of the apostles, sharing all they have, diligent about the breaking of bread and prayers.  The Christian community calls others to safe pasture, protects them from harm, and offers life abundant through the Christ who calls us disciples and friends.

Sermon:  “Like the Good Shepherd…”

Fifth Sunday of EasterEarth Day Celebration, April 20,  2008

Scriptures:  1 Peter 2:2-10,  John 14:1-14

Theme:  Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life.  If we see the Christ, we have seen God.  If we follow in the way, we do Jesus’ works and so participate in the works with God as co-creators in the restoration of creation.

Sermon:  “Living Stones”  (A play on Peter’s name) -- The baptized are living stones with Christ as our cornerstone.

Sixth Sunday of Easter,  April 27, 2008

Scriptures:  John 14:15-21

Theme:  Paul’s classic sermon on Mars Hill (also known as the Areopagus) raises important issues for our faith communities.  First, how do we respond to the presence of alternative faiths?  Second, are we well acquainted with the Object of our worship?

Sermon:  “Grounded in the Christian Faith”
