Prayer Calendar Mission Minute:

As I look back over the year, I hear the word joy.  In April and May, I heard joy in the voices of the families able to plant vegetable gardens because Seeds of Bounty Programs had seeds.  In July, I heard joy in the laughter of children at Camp Fort Blackmore for vacation Bible school.  In August, I heard joy from parents when they received school supplies for their children.  There is joy in my office as I open cards, I’m ready to sing, “Joy to the world, the Lord is come!”  --Nancy Tomlinson Hobbs, church and community worker, Big Stone Gap, Virginia

When I read in the Prayer Calendar the statements of missionaries, deaconesses and other Church workers around the world I realize how far the money we in the United Methodist Women and the local Church give through pledges and special donations goes to help across the world.  We may gripe about the high cost of gasoline, but we have a car to drive from one location to another; we fuss because our doctor or dentist cannot see us on a moment’s notice, but many people do not even have a doctor or dentist to visit, and their medical care is what the local healer can provide.  We remodel our homes, or buy bigger ones, but millions of people across the world are sleeping under bridges, in tents, or just on the open ground.  How truly blessed we are in our little corner of the world, and blessed that we have means to share with those who are in such desperate need.

As I type up this column the United Methodist Women are busy preparing Wesley Hall to receive all the donations of clothing, pots and pans, books and other things we have discarded, but feel that others can use.  And that is true, what is one man’s trash becomes someone else’s treasure.  Maybe it only costs 50 cents, but if it is a treasure to you or to me it is worth it.  I do hope that you have contributed your “trash” (not really) and have come and purchased “treasures.”

Thought For the Day:  Courageous people aren’t fearless--they just take action in spite of their fears.  --Anon.

Peace,  Alberta
